Boxing Glove Size Guide: Understanding 8 oz, 10 oz, 12 oz, 14 oz and 16 oz

Boxing gloves are commonly described by ounces rather than simple small, medium or large sizes. The ounce rating primarily describes glove weight, while fit is influenced by the hand compartment and construction.

8 oz

8 oz gloves are commonly associated with lighter training or competition applications where permitted. They are not automatically right for every athlete.

10 oz and 12 oz

These weights are widely used for training and bag work, depending on the athlete and gym requirements.

14 oz and 16 oz

Heavier gloves are frequently selected for general training and sparring because they provide more mass and padding. Many gyms use 14 oz or 16 oz gloves for sparring, but coaches and local rules should guide the final choice.

For custom brands

A specification should identify weight, intended use, hand compartment, padding construction and wrist closure. Boxing Forge can manufacture custom gloves across a range of weights and specifications.
