A Mouthguard Belongs on Your Boxing Kit Checklist

A Mouthguard Belongs on Your Boxing Kit Checklist

It is easy to spend time comparing gloves and leave the mouthguard until the last minute. Put it on the kit list from the beginning and ask your coach what is required before contact training.

Make fit the priority

The American Dental Association recommends a properly fitted mouthguard to help reduce sports-related oral injuries. A mouthguard is not a guarantee against injury. If you are unsure which type suits you, speak with your dentist rather than choosing only by colour or price.

Ask about braces and dental work

Braces, changes to your teeth and existing dental work are reasons to get individual advice. Your dentist or orthodontist can guide the choice and fit. Follow the product's fitting instructions instead of improvising a heating or trimming method.

Give it its own care routine

Follow the maker's cleaning instructions and use an appropriate ventilated storage case. Check for damage and changes in fit, and ask your dentist when replacement is needed. Keep it personal rather than sharing it between members. If you are buying a boxing set, read exactly what is included: a pictured glove, headguard and protector combination does not mean a mouthguard is supplied.
